Self-Defense and Women

The importance of self-defense and safety for women is something that the second and third waves can agree on wholeheartedly. But the methods we use to promote them can appear (falsely) to be at odds.

The second wave values civic action over insuring the practical safety of each individual. Even if they deny it, that can be the upshot of their actions. The third wave, however, works 8 to 5 because it's simply accepted, and confronts dark parking lots day in and day out as a matter of course. We live alone, without family, husbands, partners, or even roommates. When the bump in the night awakens us, we need practical solutions. We are moving in a more "liberalized" dating atmosphere, which can mean increased endangerment sometimes.

And we need solutions that don't culminate in buying a whistle, locking our doors, and writing to our congressional representatives. We need more, the whole spectrum of self-defense options.

And our opinions on these options will differ from the second wave.
